Sometimes those that need help the most are the ones we are most afraid of helping. This morning on my way into a restaurant to have breakfast with several of my friends, there was a man standing in the parking lot by his broken down van. It was obvious that the van was his home and that he had just pulled off the highway. This man looked nothing like me. He was unkempt. He was a different color. He obviously made others around him uncomfortable as they hurried by with their eyes downward. I asked if he needed help and he really didn’t reply. Then he appeared at our table a short time later. I asked him if I could help him get to someplace safe and warm and he graciously accepted. One of my friends and I took him to a church shelter. His name is Sam and he lives in his van on the road. Normally I would have taken one look at him and walked away. This time I helped. The lesson for me is not to judge the character of someone just because he appears broken and socially unacceptable. We are after all fellow travelers on the road of life. This is Deed A Day deed number 3. 362 deeds to go!

This is really what kindness is all about. I volunteer at a local middle school for Character Counts and will be sure to share this with them. Thanks
