A payphone I used today put my call through without quarters. Instead of leaving this problem for someone else to worry about, I decided to take a minute and call the repair number posted on the phone. If I owned the payphone, I would have been glad be notified about this.

Last week, my two kids and I were shopping at Aldi on Maize Road. While there, a woman asked if we were in need of money. After saying that we weren’t, she gave me $20. She said it was for the kids to split. After we all thanked her, I told the kids their job was to pray for her throughout the day. When we were in the checkout lane, I told her about the prayers coming her way and she seemed very pleased. Thank you, whoever you are. We all learned a valuable lesson that day.

Since moving into our neighborhood 10 years ago I have cooked at least once a week and sometimes as many as 3 times a week for our elderly neighbor and her grandson. We mow her lawn when he can’t, I shop for her when I am at the store already, we collect her mail when she is gone, I have picked up her house when she was too ill to do so and I have done minor repirs to her cars. I have taught my children to practice what I preach, they too do one act of kindness every day, we know it’s just the right way to live our lives.

I learned about this website while at the Red Cross, after donating a pint. The other thing I learned there, is the need for other blood donars. The comment was made that there are plenty of people who are able to donate, but just don’t think about it or get around to it. Hopefully, this will encourage others to make a donation of blood.

A friend of mine decided instead of just crying about an abused dogs death he would take action. He grabbed his video camera, went over to the house and took some hard-to-watch footage of the pathetic animal lying dead and abandoned in the yard. He is writing a letter to the editor and trying to force action from the powers at be. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWBhq_78VPs

A few nights ago, as I was leaving Century II, a woman, with a little girl stopped me. She said she was just kicked out of her house the day before and was living in her fathers van. She asked for some money to get a burger at McDonalds. I gave her all the money I had in my pocket, which was only about $4. I thought, even if she is lying or scamming, she obviously needs the $4 worst than I do. Plus, I had my children with me, and I thought it would be a good example to them, to teach them about helping others.

We went to eat on a Saturday afternoon while watching our grandson while his mother worked, after we finished our meal the waitress said it was taken care of. When I asked her by which person so I could thank them, she said she didn’t know. She said the man told her to tell us it was a blessing from God. This really surprised me, I would like to thank the person or persons who did this kind act for us.

You know how all those crummy little things that happen can begin to snowball? My “snowball” landed in a flooded basement this week! In the words of the immortal Shirley Temple: “Oh. My. Goodness.” By yesterday afternoon, I was running out of rope.

In between crises, had to make a quick grocery store run and decided to grab a box of fresh donuts. On the way home, I stopped in our neighborhood fire station and left the donuts with the guys to say thank you. You see, my mother — who is in her nineties and has a myriad of “old-age” health problems — lives with me and I am her sole caregiver. As careful as she is, occasionally she does fall, and I’ve had to call the EMTs to come pick her up and check her out They’ve been fabulous, treating her with dignity, respect and good humor.

They seemed thrilled with the surprise “treats.” And I left with a new spring in my step … and a much improved attitude!

My wife drives our grandaughter to a work program every morning and on one cold snowy morning noticed a woman and her two small children walking down the sidewalk. Seeing them again the next morning ,she stopped and offered a ride. As we were later to learn, the woman had just moved into some temorary housing, and walked her 4year old daughter to day care, her son to school, and then walked to work. From then on, Sharon provided transportation to Chelsea and her children to and from school and work , plus grocery shopping on Fridays! Oh and i forgot to mention during this time she was diagnosed with breast cancer and still took time out of her day for someone else. Now that spring is almost here Chelsea and her children have found permanent housing and other transportation. Sharon is undergoing treatment for her cancer and expects a full recovery! I’m sure another Chelsea is right around the corner!

I donate platelets at the Red Cross every 2 weeks.
My first attempt at donating did not go so well. When my high school dance coach saw the bruise on my inner elbow she asked what happened. After telling her she began crying and explained about her son have leukemia. She told me “Because of people like you, my son is still alive.”
That was it, her telling me that made me feel like I needed to do this. For her son and others in need.

Alot of people are afraid of giving someone with special needs a chance. Once you have let them into your life and tried to understand what they are about, you find out that they have alot of the same wants, needs and personality traits that most people do. they are just hampered with a disability. Once you have opened your mind and heart to someone with special needs, you will never turn back. All that I have ever met in my life are some of the most wonderful, caring and loving people you could ever meet. Their biggest need, ever is to have a friend to talk to and that cares. Start with a smile and a hello, and let it blossom from there!

If you shop at Aldis like we do, instead of returning your cart for that quarter give your cart to someone else getting ready to go in to the store. And don’t let them give you their quarter! This has become my favorite part of going to the grocery store.

I was leaving the parking lot of St. Jo hospital recently when an older model BIG car stalled as it was trying to turn into the parking lot. There was a steep incline to get up into the lot. As one car occupant steered and the other tried to push, it was wonderful to watch as, first one and then 2 other strapping young men ran from their cars to assist. I have submitted a picture of the four as they pushed the car down the row of spaces, having successfully ascended the hill.

Every week I try to write a handwritten note of appreciation to someone. This not only makes me feel good, but I hope it is a pat on the back for the recipient as well.

I bought two pieces of ply-wood each was 4X8. I planned ahead and brought ropes and other items to help secure them to the roof of my little Versa. I was in the parking lot trying to get the large wood pieces on my roof and a young man approached me and asked how far I had to go. Three miles. He said he would be glad to put the wood in his pick-up and drive them to my house. I accepted his offer. Wow – what a nice gesture.

I don’t know about you, but I work in a manufacturing plant, where every day, I’m going through doors, and doors, and doors. Every time I go through a door, if someone is behind me, or if someone is coming through the other side, I open the door and let them go through. I usually make a joke about it and say “The important people first”…….this never fails to get a smile in return……and a lot of times I’ll get a laugh in response…..simple act……great results!

I know some people who like to play guitar. We are not the best players by any means, but we decided to start playing once a month for the residents at the local nursing home. We play on the 3rd Sunday of the month for 1 hour. It’s been a great experience. It forces us to practice and it’s fun to see the residents joining in and singing with us. We’re now up to 6 people, and we’re having the time of our lives!
