I just had someone make my day! It was a thank you from the heart along with homemade treats. It doesn’t have to been complicated deed just a heartfelt one. Thank you!!!

A family friend recently passed away and instead of sending a standard “I’m sorry for your loss” card to her children and husband, I took some time to write to them about a time when she came to my aid and how much that meant to me and how it was reflective on the person she was and good friend she was to me and my family.

This past Thursday I received the greatest Christmas present I could have ever given myself. I was waiting at the Grey Hound Bus Terminal to pick up a box of Frozen mice shipped from Dallas, TX, that I feed my eagles, hawks and owls at Eagle Valley Raptor Center. I was early and they were not open yet. As I was sitting in my van, with one of my little owls I had taken along for the ride, I looked up and there in the alley behind the Bus Building, there was what was obviously a homeless man around 70 years old, standing in the sun like he was trying to keep warm. He had a old torn jacket on, a pair of dirty pants that had one leg torn from the knees down to his shoes. You could see he had no socks on, and his legs were red and bluish and looked swollen. He had on a pair of tennis shoes that he didn’t have tied up. He had all of his belongings in plastic bags between his legs on the ground. When ever another person would walk by him he would lower his head and squeeze his belongings as if to protect them from beinging taken. When the bus terminal opened up, I went inside to get my package. As I was waiting, the man I was watching came inside and put his belongings on one of the benches. He reached in his pocket and pulled out some money and started counting it. He then walked up to the ticket counter. I got my box of mice and took it outside to my van. I had this man on my mind and wanted to find out what his situation was. I went back inside and sat down next to him and introduced myself. I asked him where he was headed and he said Salina to see his sister. He said they had a special where it was only $10.00 to get there. He was seeing his sister. I asked him if he had another pair of pants to wear and he said he didn’t. I then I asked him if he would go over to Gander Mountain with me to get some new pants and socks. He said he had some money, but he needed it for food and medicine and he was on social security. I loaded him and his belongings in my van. On the way there we talked and found out he was 79 years old, a retired military vet and his name was Richard. When we went into the store the employees immediately looked at him as he was dirty and smelled. I told the store manager about him and that he was with me and I was paying for everything. We found some nice insulated Carhart Bibs for him and some wool socks. I had Richard wear the bibs to the check out stand. We paid for everything, and I wanted to throw away his old pants, but he wanted to keep them. So I asked the clerk for an extra bag. He hadn’t put on his socks yet, so I asked him to sit in a chair at the entrance of the store and put on a pair. He was having a hard time getting them on. His feet were swollen and in very bad condition. I think it hurt for him to try and put on socks. So I got on my knees and helped him. As people were coming in the store, some of them passed by without looking and some even made faces. I felt like I was meant to do this for him and I didn’t care who saw me. When I was lacing his shoes up, he said to me “You know they have very competitve prices here” I about busted out laughing! After we got his socks on and shoes laced up, we went back to my van and I took him back to the bus terminal. When we got there, he seemed to walk really tall and proud as he went back to the ticket counter. When he came back to the bench to sit down, I told him he owed me for what I did for him. He had already thanked me, and asked what he owed me. I told him that if he ever saw someone that he was able to help in some way, I wanted him to pay it forward. He said he would and smiled. We said our goodbyes and said Merry Christmas and I left. Why I did this I do not know. I have never done something like this before, but it is now going to be a new Christmas Tradition. This whole thing took maybe an hour, but it has given me a life time of memories. As I drove home I had a big lump of happiness in my throat!

I spent time making Christmas cookies with my “little sister”. We threw on aprons, mixed up the ingredients and baked up some chocolate chip yumminess. You’d never know it was her first time cracking an egg.

Videotaped my boss’s parents talking about what it was like to raise their creative wild child, Sonia. She now has a 26-minute video she prizes more than gold – and we have blackmail material for years to come;)

Beans, brain food and Milkbones. These are a few of my favorite things. Came to the desk last Thursday to find great coffee, book of brain teasers and mound of dog treats in a sweet basket. Mysterious Deeder turns out to be the indispensable and very talented Rachel Groene, Greteman Group colleague and stealth gifter (someone snitched). She hit the nail on the head, and brains and dogs love it. Thanks, RG! The secret DTD Christmas concept was great fun and many good deeds were done.

For our annual holiday party, this year we decided to forgo our traditional gift exchange. Instead we drew names and did good deeds for one another. I drew agency president Sonia Greteman. Knowing how much Sonia adores her parents and values her family memories, I approached Judy and Ken about doing a video. They kindly agreed – not liking the idea of being on video but knowing it was something Sonia would love. The day after Thanksgiving my video-proficient partner and I spent a lovely afternoon with the Greteman’s, hearing their stories. Greteman Group team members helped me put together a 26-minute video from the footage and to create a nice DVD label. You may not have a creative agency at your disposal, but I bet you have a video camera. There’s still time before Christmas to sit your parents or grandparents down. Capture a memory and gift it to a loved one. It will be cherished. Forever.

I know a guy who loves video games. What better way to show him I appreciate his awesomeness than taking him out for a lunch at the arcade?

Yesterday a co-workers car was hit on Kellogg in a hit and run. She was rattled and did not catch the plate number. A good citizen trailed the car, called in the plate and the driver was cited.

Thank you to the person who saw a “hit and run” accident today, followed the driver and phoned in the tag number to the police. If not for you, I’d be scrambling for a deductible right before the holidays.

I’m blessed not to be hurt and so thankful for whomever you are. May you be blessed.

About a week ago, I was working out in the gym at my apartment complex. This lady approaches me and tells me that she lives a walking distance of 45 minutes away and doesn’t have a ride home. After a little shuffling around on my part to make sure I could afford it, I thought to myself, “So I’ll spend $5 on a pack of cigarettes, but I’m second guessing myself whether or not to take this lady home?” I immediately said yes. The best part of it all is that the very next day, I myself was left without a ride home. Upon overhearing my conversation, a coworker said in an instant, “I can take you home. No problem.”

You see, every single decision that we make on a daily basis impacts someone else’s life, and it’s our responsibility to make the most of every moment we live.

This is an activity to give back to the less fortunate such as Homeless and or Hobo’s by giving them a christmas card! This is to spread the love of christmas to people less fortunate.

Recently, I heard Miss Kansas speaking to a group of students. She talked about helping others and doing a deed of kindness for someone else. I immediately thought of my neighbor’s daughter who has been sick for a couple of days. I was so inspired by the thought of how easy doing a deed was that I made some soup and took it to the little girl. Also, I brought her a tiara and an autographed picture of Miss Kansas. Her eyes lit up! I think it made her day and it definitely made mine!

I try to do things for people as I go along so I’ve thought all week about how to do something different and put my card in circulation…

I donated several coats to our church to be sent to an Indian reservation in South Dakota. I gave the card to someone in the church office and explained what we were doing and asked that they pass the card along to the next person.

I attend college with several young adults that struggle to stay above the poverty level. While speaking with one student and his wife one night, we began to fantasize about the riches that await us further on in our careers. His biggest roadblock, he said, happened to be his ragged appearance. He only owned two pairs of pants, both of which were old, faded, ragged at the cuffs, and often dirty. Later that week I brought him 10 pairs of jeans that no longer fit me, all almost brand new. In addition to the jeans, I also threw in 3 pairs of dress slacks to wear for the imminent job interview in his future.

Simply smile to anyone, a friendly look instead of giving them a nasty look. Maybe, his/her day gets better by your smile and It doesn’t cost anything. A good deed simply can be a big SMILE, a positive sign…..and if we all smile, the world will be a better place.

I was shopping at Dillon’s Marketplace in Andover, KS a couple weeks ago today about 8-9 PM. A nice couple older than myself were buying red grapes which is all they had to purchase. They finished their transaction and the clerk turned her attention toward me and asked for my Dillon’s Shopper Card. I handed it to her about that time she handed it back to me and I was putting it back in my wallet, the lady that was ahead of me said, “Don’t worry we got this for you!” It took me totally by surprise since I wasn’t paying much attention and thought they had went on. I asked her, “Excuse me?” and she restated herself to me. She added, “This is how we show God’s love. Have a good evening!” and they were off. I stood there with my mouth hanging open as I obligingly said loud enough “Thank You and God bless you both!” It was very heartfelt and touching to me. Never in my mother’s lifetime when I told her of this has this happened to anyone in her 70+ years. Pay It Forward!! There are good people still out there and should be recognized!! Have Faith in mankind!! These people did this as a random act of kindness! It does exist out there and definitely restored my faith in people once again! Who ever you both are…Many Thanks to you both! This will be shared with those reunion goers at my 25th Class Reunion for Augusta Senior High School this coming weekend as well! Let’s keep Paying It Forward and show everyone that caring people still exist in life!
